TOP TIP FROM STEVE SAYERS PGA

When hitting out of the sand make sure to follow these five principles to better success on the course.

  1. Ball position – forward of centre, between your feet.
  2. Open your shoulders and feet to your target – if your right handed you should be aiming left of your target with your body - clubface at your target.
  3. Open your clubface before gripping the golf club, this will make it easier to set your hands slightly in forward while addressing the ball.
  4. Focus on a small pebble 1 inch behind the golf ball; this is the area you want to make impact with.
  5. Leave the face of your club open during your follow through by keeping your right elbow underneath your left elbow while rotating your body and arms at your target.
  6. 60% of your weight is on the front foot.

The sand will make impact with the ball so imagine sliding the club underneath the ball. Be aggressive and do not decelerate into the ball. Bring the club back a different distance depending on the length of the bunker shot and follow through
